Free Press?

We support a free press, but is our press truly free?

Many of us are under the illusion that we have a free and independent press, the truth is we don’t.

The majority of national newspapers are controlled by a few individuals who use them to further their own interests. This means that the news that is published can be distorted or not include important information.

We are supposed to be living in a democracy – but when the facts are denied us, then our democracy is undermined. How can we make informed decisions on how to vote or what is best for us all?

This becomes critical in relation to the climate crisis, when the danger and urgency of the situation is not reflected in the majority of the press. That in turn allows our government to ignore important decisions and actions which are needed now to prevent disaster.

The top principle to come from the UK Climate Assembly is: “Informing and Educating Everyone”
